11. Bontebok Route National Park.
Rumbo al Bontebok National Park: una joya por descubrir en Sudáfrica. El 3 de septiembre dejamos atrás Plettenberg Bay, en pleno Garden Route National Park, para dirigirnos hacia nuestro próximo destino: una granja en las llanuras de Agulhas. Pero antes, teníamos una cuenta pendiente de nuestro primer viaje a Sudáfrica: conocer el Bontebok National Park. Ubicado en las afueras del pintoresco y antiguo pueblo de Swellendam, este parque forma parte de la célebre Región Florística del Cabo, considerada uno de los reinos florales más ricos del mundo. Los visitantes pueden alojarse en un cómodo campamento equipado con todas las facilidades o disfrutar de las áreas de acampada escénicas a orillas del tranquilo río Breede. El Bontebok National Park es un refugio de belleza sencilla y encanto sereno, enmarcado por la imponente silueta de las montañas Langeberg, que lo convierten en un destino lleno de colores y vida natural. Este parque fue establecido en 1931 con el objetivo de preservar al bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus), una especie endémica en peligro en ese momento. Hoy en día, es el más pequeño de los 20 parques nacionales de Sudáfrica, con una superficie de apenas 27,86 km², pero su riqueza natural y paisajística lo convierte en una parada imperdible para los amantes de la naturaleza y la tranquilidad. Durante nuestra visita al parque, logramos observar un total de 32 especies de aves, pero algunas destacaron especialmente y merecen una mención especial. Tuvimos la suerte de ver una imponente avutarda cafre, un singular avemartillo, con su peculiar silueta inconfundible, y varias rapaces que sobrevolaban majestuosas el paisaje. Entre ellas, el águila calzada, el elanio común, el busardo augur meridional y el ágil aguilucho negro. Una experiencia inolvidable para cualquier amante de la ornitología. Heading to Bontebok National Park: A Hidden Gem in South Africa. On September 3rd, we left Plettenberg Bay, located within the Garden Route National Park, and set off toward our next destination: a farm in the Agulhas Plains. But before that, we had a stop we couldn’t skip, a place that remained on our list since our first trip to South Africa: Bontebok National Park. Situated on the outskirts of the charming and historic town of Swellendam, the park is part of the renowned Cape Floristic Region, one of the richest plant kingdoms on Earth. Visitors can stay in a well-equipped rest camp or enjoy scenic campsites nestled along the peaceful banks of the Breede River. Bontebok National Park is a haven of simple beauty and quiet charm, with the majestic Langeberg Mountains painting a stunning backdrop filled with natural color and life. Established in 1931 to ensure the conservation of the bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus), the park is the smallest of South Africa’s 20 national parks, covering just 27.86 km². Despite its size, it offers a rich and rewarding experience for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility. During our visit to the park, we spotted a total of 32 bird species, but a few truly stood out and deserve a special mention. We were fortunate enough to see a striking Denham’s bustard, the distinctive hamerkop with its unmistakable silhouette, and several birds of prey gliding gracefully above the landscape. These included the booted eagle, black-winged kite, jackal buzzard, and the elegant black harrier. An unforgettable experience for any birdwatching enthusiast.
