3. West Coast National Park.
A poca distancia del tranquilo puerto de la bahía de Saldanha, y a solo hora y media en coche del centro de Ciudad del Cabo, se encuentran las aguas de un azul turquesa de la Laguna de Langebaan, el corazón del West Coast National Park. Con el telón de fondo de la laguna azul, aparecen dunas blancas, extraños fynbos, humedales verdes y olas sin fin. Un paraíso para excursionistas, ciclistas y observadores de aves y amantes de la naturaleza en general. El parque alberga un total de más de 250 especies de aves, más de una cuarta parte del total de Sudáfrica. El parque se adorna además, entre agosto y septiembre, con una colorida alfombra de flores. Con la llegada de la primavera, el parque se transforma en un bello espectáculo de colores gracias al fynbos y al veld en flor que cubren el paisaje. Esta explosión de color se da especialmente en la Postberg Section (que sólo está abierta al público durante la temporada de floración), y ofrece unos paisajes sin parangón en toda la costa oeste de Sudáfrica. En esta ocasión, visitamos el parque los días 19 y 20 de agosto. Ambos días entramos por la entrada sur (-33.243707, 18.204365), y el último día abandonamos el parque por la entrada norte (-33.114441, 18.052846)
Just a short distance from the harbour of Saldanha Bay, and only an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town’s city centre, lie the turquoise waters of the Langebaan Lagoon, the heart of the West Coast National Park. Set against the backdrop of the blue lagoon, you will find white dunes, rare fynbos, green wetlands and endless waves. A paradise for hikers, cyclists, birdwatchers and nature lovers in general. The park is home to over 250 bird species, more than a quarter of South Africa’s total. From August to September, the park is also adorned with a colourful sea of flowers. With the arrival of spring, the park transforms into a breathtaking display of colour, thanks to the blooming fynbos and veld that cover the landscape. This explosion of colour is especially striking in the Postberg Section (open to the public only during the flower season), offering magnificent views unmatched along South Africa’s West Coast. In this occasion, we visited the park on August 19th and 20th. Both days we entered the park through the south gate (-33.243707, 18.204365), whereas the last day we left the park through the north gate (-33.114441, 18.052846)

La mañana del 19 de agosto iniciamos la visita por Geelbek (-33.194565, 18.125723), la zona donde se localiza el centro de información y donde hay varios observatorios para ver las aves que se encuentran en la bahía de Langebaan. En la misma pudimos ver abundantes flamencos rosas, junto a zarapitos trinadores, aguja colipinta, y archibebe claro, entre otros.
On the morning of August 19, we began our visit in Geelbek (-33.194565, 18.125723), the area where the information center is located and where several bird hides allow for viewing the birds that inhabit Langebaan Lagoon. There, we saw numerous greater flamingos, along with whimbrels, bar-tailed godwits, and common greenshanks, among others.
El resto de la mañana y buena parte de la tarde la pasamos explorando la zona más al oeste, la denominada sección Postberg. Esta zona que ofrece una floración espectacular durante los meses del invierno austral. Aquí abundaban las prinias y alzacolas del Karoo, suimangas acerados, bulbul de El cabo, o rapaces como aguiluchos negros o elanios comunes.
We spent the rest of the morning and much of the afternoon exploring the west part of the park, known as Postberg section, an area known for its spectacular wildflower bloom during the austral winter months. This area was teeming with Karoo prinias and scrub-robins, southern double-collared sunbirds, Cape bulbuls, as well as raptors such as black harriers and black-winged kites.
Al acabar la sección Postberg nos acercamos a ver la costa, tanto en Plankiesbaai como en Tsaarsbank. Aquí algún estornino bicolor, más alzacolas del Karoo, gaviota plateada sudafricana, chorlitejo frentiblanco y ostrero negro africano.
After finishing the Postberg section, we headed to the coast, visiting both Plankiesbaai and Tsaarsbank. There, we spotted a few african pied starlings, more Karoo scrub-robins, Hartlaub's gulls, white-fronted plover, and the African black oystercatcher.
Y para finalizar, ya por la tarde, fuimos al Abrahamskraal waterhole, una pequeña zona de agua dulce. No había muchas especies, aunque sí vimos espátula africana, tejedor de El Cabo y alguna focha moruna.
And to finish off the day, in the afternoon, we visited the Abrahamskraal waterhole, a small freshwater area. There weren’t many species, but we did spot an African spoonbill, Cape weavers, and a few Common Moorhens.
Y ya de regreso a Yzerfontein, donde nos alojábamos, aún pude disfrutar de un alcaraván de El Cabo, el único que vimos en este viaje. Un espectacular final para una interesante jornada.
And on Yzerfontein, where we were staying, I was fortunate enough to spot a spotted thick-knee, the only one we saw on this trip. A spectacular ending to an interesting day.
El día 20 volvimos a recorrer una parte de la sección Postberg, y brevemente Geelbek, para luego dirigimos a la zona este del parque, donde hicimos una parada algo más larga en el Seeberg Viewpoint, además de todas las necesarias por la carretera. Repetimos muchas de las especies, pero como destacado, en el último punto observamos sisón negro y francolín aligris, además de eland de El Cabo.
On the 20th, we revisited a part of the Postberg section and briefly stopped at Geelbek before heading to the eastern area of the park. We made a longer stop at the Seeberg Viewpoint, along with several necessary stops along the road. We encountered many of the same species, but the highlights were a southern black bustard and a grey-winged francolín at the last stop, as well as common elands.
Y con esto acabamos la visita al West Coast National Park, no sin antes hacer recuento del total de especies. En cuanto a mamíferos, vimos un total de 6 especies, incluyendo raficero (Raphicerus campestris) (1), bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus) (7), duiker de sabana (Sylvicapra grimmia) (1), cebra de montaña (Equus zebra) (1), óryx de El Cabo (Oryx gazella) (1), y eland de El Cabo (Taurotragus oryx) (unos 121). And with that, we concluded our visit to West Coast National Park, not without first tallying up the total number of species observed. As for mammals, we recorded a total of six species: steenbok (Raphicerus campestris) (1), bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus) (7), common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) (1), mountain zebra (Equus zebra) (1), gemsbok (Oryx gazella) (1), and common eland (Taurotragus oryx) (with an impressive count of around 121 individuals).
