9. Sudays River Mounth.
El 29 de agosto aprovechamos unas horas fuera del Addo Elephant National Park para explorar el Sundays River. Habíamos reservado un paseo en barca desde Colchester, un pequeño y tranquilo pueblo situado justo a la salida sur del parque. Varias empresas locales ofrecen esta actividad, que generalmente consiste en navegar hasta la desembocadura del río para admirar la imponente gran duna de arena, y luego remontar el curso del río para disfrutar del paisaje y la fauna. Durante la excursión tuvimos la suerte de avistar un total de 35 especies de aves, incluyendo algunas tan llamativas como la majestuosa garza goliat, el colorido abejaruco frentiblanco y nuestra primera anhinga africana, todo un espectáculo para los amantes de la ornitología. On August 29th, we took a short break from Addo Elephant National Park to explore the Sundays River. We had booked a boat tour departing from Colchester, a small and peaceful village located just beyond the park’s southern gate. Several local companies offer these tours, which typically head toward the river mouth to visit the impressive giant sand dune, and then upstream to enjoy more of the river’s scenery and wildlife. During the excursion, we were lucky enough to spot a total of 35 bird species, including highlights like the majestic Goliath heron, the colorful white-fronted bee-eater, and our very first African darter, a real treat for birdwatching enthusiasts. Our boat departed from these coordinates: -33.690900, 25.828407, though the booking point is located here: -33.691136, 25.826094.

Mientras esperábamos en el punto de reservas, aprovechamos para tomar algo y relajarnos un rato. Incluso allí, sin necesidad de movernos, pudimos observar otras siete especies de aves. Entre ellas destacaban el barbudo de collar negro y el bulbul naranjero, lo que demuestra que en esta región, la naturaleza está presente en cada rincón.
While we waited at the booking point, we took the opportunity to grab a drink and relax for a bit. Even without moving from the spot, we managed to observe seven more bird species. Notable among them were the black-collared barbet and the common bulbul, proof that in this region, nature surrounds you at every turn.
Y ya una vez en la barca, además de las especies que figuran en nuestro listado de eBird, tuvimos la suerte de avistar un meloncillo recorriendo las orillas, husmeando entre la vegetación en busca de algo que llevarse al gaznate.
Once on the boat, in addition to the bird species listed in our eBird trip report, we were lucky enough to spot an Egyptian mongoose patrolling the riverbanks, sniffing through the vegetation in search of a bite to eat.
