Enclavada en las verdes montañas cerca de Manizales, la reserva Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve (5.064915, -75.591933) es un pequeño paraíso para los amantes de la naturaleza y, en especial, de las aves. Situada aproximadamente a hora y media en coche de nuestro anterior destino, el Nido del Cóndor, y a escasos 40 minutos de la ciudad de Manizales, resulta además un lugar muy accesible dentro de la región. Nosotros tuvimos la suerte de alojarnos allí durante dos noches, del 12 al 14 de agosto de 2025, y la experiencia no pudo ser más gratificante. Aquí el canto de los pájaros marca el ritmo del día, y no es raro avistar tucanes, tangaras de colores vibrantes o colibríes que parecen suspendidos en el aire. Los senderos, rodeados de vegetación exuberante, invitan a caminar sin prisa, descubriendo cada detalle del bosque andino. Disfrutamos muchísimo tanto por la increíble diversidad de especies que pudimos observar como por la simpatía y cercanía de los anfitriones. Es un lugar ideal para desconectar del ruido y reconectar con lo esencial. Ya sea al amanecer, con la niebla cubriendo las colinas, o al atardecer, cuando todo se tiñe de tonos dorados, Tinamú ofrece momentos difíciles de olvidar. Un destino perfecto para quienes buscan tranquilidad, biodiversidad y paisajes llenos de vida.
Nestled in the lush green mountains near Manizales, Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve (5.064915, -75.591933) is a small paradise for nature lovers, especially bird enthusiasts. Located about an hour and a half by car from our previous destination, Nido del Cóndor, and just 40 minutes from the city of Manizales, it is also very easy to reach within the region. We were lucky enough to stay there for two nights, from August 12 to 14, 2025, and the experience could not have been more rewarding. Here, birdsong sets the rhythm of the day, and it’s common to spot toucans, brightly colored tanagers, or hummingbirds hovering effortlessly in midair. The trails, surrounded by dense vegetation, invite you to slow down and notice every detail of the Andean forest. We had an amazing time, both because of the incredible diversity of species we observed and the friendliness and warmth of the hosts. It’s an ideal place to disconnect from noise and reconnect with what truly matters. Whether at sunrise, with mist covering the hills, or at sunset, when everything glows in golden hues, Tinamú offers unforgettable moments. A perfect destination for those seeking tranquility, biodiversity, and vibrant landscapes.

Nada más llegar el primer día, incluso antes de que nos asignaran la habitación, ya estábamos completamente inmersos en la experiencia: los comederos de la reserva bullían de actividad, con una sorprendente variedad de aves acercándose a pocos metros. Pudimos observar numerosos colibríes de distintas especies, junto con coloridas tangaras e incluso algún momoto que se dejaba ver con calma. Después de instalarnos, comenzamos a recorrer los senderos de la finca, que poco a poco nos fueron revelando la enorme diversidad de fauna del lugar. Cada tramo ofrecía nuevas sorpresas, confirmando la riqueza biológica del entorno. Además de aves, también tuvimos la suerte de ver algunos mamíferos, como la ardilla de cola roja o el agutí centroamericano, lo que hizo la experiencia aún más completa y fascinante.
As soon as we arrived on the first day, even before being shown to our room, we were already immersed in the experience: the feeding stations were buzzing with activity, with an impressive variety of birds coming just a few meters away. We were able to observe numerous hummingbirds of different species, along with colorful tanagers and even a motmot calmly making an appearance. After settling in, we began exploring the reserve’s trails, which gradually revealed the remarkable diversity of wildlife in the area. Each stretch brought new surprises, highlighting the richness of the ecosystem. In addition to birds, we were also lucky enough to spot some mammals, such as the Red-tailed Squirrel and the Central American Agouti, making the experience even more complete and fascinating.
El segundo día comenzamos la jornada acercándonos al punto de alimentación del hormiguero inmaculado, donde tuvimos la suerte de ver hasta cuatro individuos diferentes moviéndose entre la vegetación. También logramos observar un esquivo tororoí cholino, uno de esos encuentros que hacen especial cualquier jornada de observación. Tras el desayuno, volvimos a recorrer los senderos de la reserva, siempre con la ayuda de los guías locales incluidos en el precio, cuya experiencia resultó clave para detectar especies que de otro modo habrían pasado desapercibidas. Entre los momentos más destacados estuvo la observación de un llamativo saltarín cuellidorado. Al caer la noche, la actividad no se detuvo: pudimos ver un magnífico búho de anteojos en plena acción. La guinda del día la pusieron varios kinkajús, que emergieron de un orificio que utilizan como refugio durante el día, regalándonos una escena difícil de olvidar.
On the second day, we started early by visiting the feeding station for the Blue-lored Antbird, where we were lucky enough to spot up to four different individuals moving through the vegetation. We also managed to see a shy Moustached Antpitta, one of those special sightings that make any birding day memorable. After breakfast, we set off once again along the reserve’s trails, as always with the help of the local guides included in the stay, whose expertise proved invaluable in spotting species we might otherwise have missed. One of the highlights was the observation of a striking Golden-collared Manakin. As night fell, the activity continued: we were able to see a magnificent Spectacled Owl in action. The day’s grand finale came with several Kinkajous emerging from a cavity they use as a daytime shelter, giving us a truly unforgettable moment.
El día de nuestra partida aún pudimos aprovechar la mañana hasta el mediodía, repitiendo algunos de los senderos que ya habíamos recorrido y sumando nuevas observaciones para completar nuestra lista de especies. Fue un cierre perfecto para una estancia tan intensa como gratificante, en la que cada paseo seguía ofreciendo sorpresas. Sin duda, Tinamú se ha convertido en uno de los lugares más destacados de nuestra visita a los Andes colombianos.
On the day of our departure, we were still able to make the most of the morning until midday, revisiting some of the trails we had already explored and adding new sightings to complete our species list. It was the perfect ending to such a rewarding stay, where every walk continued to bring new surprises. Without a doubt, Tinamú stands out as one of the highlights of our trip to the Colombian Andes.
En total, nuestra visita al Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve finalizó con un total de 78 especies de aves observadas y 4 de mamíferos: tres micos nocturnos de vientre gris (Aotus lemurinus), una ardilla de cola roja (Sciurus granatensis), un agutí de Centroamérica (Dasyprocta punctata) y al menos dos kinkajús (Potos flavus). Ademas, pudimos observar una ranita de pantano colombiana (Dendropsophus columbianus) y una iguana verde (Iguana iguana).
We wrapped up our visit to Tinamú Birding Nature Reserve with a total count of 78 bird species and 4 mammal species: three Lemurine Night Monkeys (Aotus lemurinus), one Red-tailed Squirrel (Sciurus granatensis), one Central America Aguti (Dasyprocta punctata) and at least two Kinkajous. Additionally, we saw a Boettger's Colombian Tree Frog (Dendropsophus columbianus) and one Green Iguana (Iguana iguana).
