AGOSTO 2013 - ESTADOS UNIDOS (I): Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (Utah)

Here you can see the initial part of a trip to USA that I have done this year with my family. We began visiting Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, near Brigham City, in Utah. Thereafter we moved north, to reach Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Finally, we arrived to Glacier National Park, almost in the frontier with Canada. Alghough we had visited some of these areas some time ago, we enjoyed with the beauty of these areas, that offer great opportunities to see wildlife.

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge lies where the Bear River flows into the northeast arm of the Great Salt Lake. The Refuge protects the marshes found at the mouth of the Bear River; these marshes are the largest freshwater component of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem. Since these marshes are in turn surrounded by arid desert lands, it is little wonder that they have always been an oasis for waterbirds and wildlife.

Bear River MBR contains nearly 80,000 acres of marsh, open water, uplands, and alkali mudflats. The marshes and open water are managed using a complex system of dikes and water control structures to provide a variety of water depths suitable for the needs of different waterbird species. The Refuge is an excellent place to observe wildlife along a 12-mile auto tour route. It is possible to stop in several places to see the birds.

The Refuge and other wetlands associated with the Great Salt Lake provide critical habitat for migrating birds, over 250 species moving through this area annually by the millions to rest and feed. White pelicans and double-crested cormorants receive you at the beginning of the auto tour route.

In the channels it was easy to see avocets, stilts and other shorebirds and gulls. This year the channels were dried to clean them, and we miss the grebes that we saw in our previous visit.

In the area of open water it was easy to see the different grebe species, together with gulls, and canada goose.

Finally, white pelicans again, to say us good bye. This is a very interesting place to visit.
