Por motivos laborales, en septiembre tenía que viajar a Islandia, un paraíso para el naturalista. Y aunque ya no tenía muchos días de vacaciones, sí aproveche para quedarme el fin de semana, para hacerme una idea de cómo era y visitar aquello que lo posible.
For work reasons, in September I had to travel to Iceland, a paradise for the naturalist. And although I didn't have many vacation days left, I did take advantage of the weekend to get an idea of what it was like and visit as much as possible
1. Reikiavik.
En el propio Reikiavik hay algunas lagunas que merecen la pena: el parque Vatnsmyrin, Tjornin pond y el parque Hljomskalagarourinn. Todos estos parques y lagunas se encuentran uno detrás del otro y ofrecen la posibilidad de ver, al menos en esta época del año, algunas anátidas (cisne cantor o porrón moñudo, entre otros) y gaviotas (sombría y reidora). También un montón de zorzales alirrojos.
In Reykjavik itself, there are some ponds that are worth visiting: Vatnsmyrin Park, Tjornin Pond, and Hljomskalagarourinn Park. All these parks and ponds are located one after the other and offer the chance to see, at least at this time of year, some waterfowl (whooper swan or tufted duck, among others) and gulls (lesser black-backed and black-headed gull). Also, a lot of redwings.
2. Þingvellir National Park.
Nos organizaron una salida para ver el círculo dorado. Al ser algo organizado, las opciones de pajarear fueron escasas. Aún así, pude disfrutar del paisaje, tanto en el parque nacional Þingvellir, como en Geysir o la cascada Gullfoss.
The congress organized a trip for us to see the Golden Circle. Since it was a guided tour, the opportunities for birdwatching were limited. Even so, I was able to enjoy the landscape, both in Þingvellir National Park and at Geysir or Gullfoss waterfall.
3. Gullfoss.
Tampoco en Gullfoss pudimos observar muchas aves, más allá de algunos cuervos, un par de cisnes cantor y poco más.
Nor at Gullfoss were we able to observe many birds, beyond a few ravens, a couple of whooper swans, and little else.
4. Gardur, Garoskagi Lighthouse y Fitjatjorn, Peninsula Reykjanes.
Una vez finalizado el congreso ya pude ir a mi aire. Aproveché para visitar la península Reykjanes. Localicé, gracias a eBird, varios puntos que podían ser interesantes, tanto costeros como algunas balsas interiores. En primer lugar me dirigí a Gardur. En las balsas Síki í Garði pude ver bastante variedad, desde gavión atlántico a gaviota sombría, pasando por collalba gris, porrón moñudo, entre un total de 13 especies. Quizás la variedad no sea mucha para los que estamos acostumbrados a salir en el sur de Europa, pero para las fechas que eran creo que no estaba mal. En la playa, las primeras gaviotas groenlandesas y vuelvepiedras, entre otras especies. En el faro, también había algunas especies, incluyendo éider común. En el faro también había bastantes especies, incluyendo éider común, mientras que en Fitjatjorn, algunos chorlitos dorados europeos.
Once the conference was over, I was able to explore on my own. I took the opportunity to visit the Reykjanes Peninsula. Thanks to eBird, I found several points that could be interesting, both coastal and some inland ponds. First, I headed to Gardur. At the Síki í Garði ponds, I was able to see quite a variety, including great and lesser black-backed gulls, along with northern wheatear and tufted duck, to sum a total of 13 species. Perhaps the variety isn't much for those of us accustomed to birdwatch in southern Europe, but for that time of the year, I think it wasn't bad. On the beach, I saw my first Iceland gulls and several ruddy turnstones, among other species. At the lighthouse, also some species, including common eider, whereas in Fitjatjorn, some eurasian golden plovers.
5. Sandgerði, Peninsula Reykjanes.
En Sandgerði había una balsa con bastante movimiento, mientras que en prado en el pueblo había tanto gaviota sombría como gavión atlántico.
In Sandgerði, there was a pond with a lot of activity, while in a fields inside the village, there were both greater and lesser black-backed gulls.
6. Hvalsneskirkja y Stafnesviti, Peninsula Reykjanes.
Aquí, además de algún ostrero, lo mejor fue el paisaje alrededor del faro. Además, algunos cormoranes moñudos, alcatraz atlántico y más éideres comunes.
Here, besides a few oystercatchers, the best part was the landscape around the lighthouse. Additionally, there were some European shags, northern gannets, and more common eiders.
7. Hafnarberg sea-cliffs, Peninsula Reykjanes.
En estos acantilados crían varias especies de álcidos. Lamentablemente, en esta época las aves ya habían abandonado los nidos. Quedaban algunos cormoranes moñudos y varios éideres comunes en el agua. El paisaje, eso sí, sobrecogedor.
At these cliffs, several species of auks breed. Unfortunately, by this time of year, the birds had already left the nests. There were some European shags and several common eiders in the water. The landscape, however, was breathtaking.
8. Valahnukamol, Peninsula Reykjanes.
Nuevamente un paisaje alucinante, complementado por mi primera observación de fúlmar boreal. Al día siguiente, estos iban a volverse habituales.
Once again, an amazing landscape, complemented by my first sighting of a northern fulmar. The next day, these were going to become common.
9. Þorlakshofn.
Esa noche dormí en el pueblo de Þorlakshofn, y al levantarme por la mañana decicí visitar la playa (Thorli beach). Aquí se congregaban varias especies de gaviotas, incluidas las dos más habituales de alas blancas, la gaviota groenlandesa y el gavión hiperbóreo. Para mi, nada fáciles de distinguir si las ves de forma separada.
That night I was hosted in the village of Þorlakshofn, and when I woke up in the morning, I decided to visit the Thorli beach. Here, several species of gulls congregated, including the two most common ones with white wings, the Iceland gull and the glaucous gull. For me, not easy to distinguish if you see them separately.

10. Eyrarbakki.
En el puerto y playa de Eyrarbakki pude ver hasta 14 especies. Un buen número de barnaclas carinegras, un tarro blanco, serretas medianas y los ya habituales éideres comunes.
At the harbor and beach of Eyrarbakki, I was able to see up to 14 species. A good number of brent geese, a single common shelduck, red-breasted mergansers, and the usual common eiders.
11. Floi Bird Reserve, Floi--Floagafl.
En la Floi Bird Reserve muy poquita cosa. Únicamente unos cisnes cantores, algunos silbones europeos, cuervos grandes y alguna gaviota lejana.
At the Floi Bird Reserve, very little activity. Only a few whooper swans, some eurasian wigeons, common ravens, and a few distant gulls.
12. Rutshellir, Skardshlid.
Un lugar interersante para visitar, no sólo culturalmente, sino también porque en estos acantilados anida el fúlmar boreal.
An interesting place to visit, not only culturally, but also because the northern fulmar nests on these cliffs.
13. Skogafoss.
Sin duda, la visitar que más me gustó. Un lugar impresinante paisajísticamente, que además cuenta con un buen número de nidos de fúlmar boreal. Además un pequeño grupo de lagópodo alpino me estuvo entreteniendo un rato, y para finalizar, y ya en el aparcamiento, un cuervo esperando, imagino, algunas sobras de comida.
Undoubtedly, the visit I liked the most. A place with stunning scenery, which also has a good number of northern fulmar nests. Additionally, a small group of rock ptarmigans entertained me for a while, and to finish, at the parking lot, a raven was waiting, I imagine, for some food scraps.
14. Seljalandsfoss.
Siguiendo con los acantilados y las cascadas, Seljalandsfoss ofrece también un escenario muy hermoso, acopañado de nuevo por los fúlmares boreales.
Continuing with the cliffs and waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss also offers a very beautiful scenery, again accompanied by northern fulmars.
15. Seltjörn, Suðurnes.
Y para finalizar, al día siguiente, y antes de marcharme, decidí hacer una parada en un bosquete que hay en el término de Suðurnes, muy cerquita ya del aeropuerto. El objetivo era intentar ve algún pardillo norteño, que suelen estar por la zona. Después de algo de esfuerzo conseguí ver unos 10 individuos, además de algunas especies distintas a lo visto hasta el momento, como reyezuelo sencillo, zorzal alirrojo, o mirlo común. Con esta visita ya no me quedó más remedio que despedirme del país, con la promesa de intentar volver en el futuro.
And to conclude, the next day, before leaving, I decided to make a stop at an small forest located in the Suðurnes region, very close to the airport. The goal was to try to see some common redpolls, which are usually in the area. After some effort, I managed to see about 10 individuals, as well as some species different from what I had seen so far, such as goldcrest, redwing, and common blackbird. With this visit, I had no choice but to bid farewell to the country, with the promise of trying to return in the future.
