El día 15 de noviembre, y tras alquilar un coche, partí desde Anaheim hacia San Diego, con la intención de ir parando en distintos puntos de la costa para observar aves. Me interesaban sobretodo las especies asociadas a las rocas. Una falla cercana a la localidad de Corona del Mar, delimita dos zonas diferenciadas en la costa del condado de Orange, con abundantes playas de arena al norte, y costa rocosa al sur. Por tanto, me dirigí por debajo de esta ciudad, dándome tiempo a visitar el Crescent Bay Point Park, el Treasure Island Park (¡¡imprescindible!!), La Jolla y la Torrey Pines State Reserve. En esta última zona paseé por una extensión de la reserva cubierta de chaparral, ya que en los dos puntos anteriores ya había conseguido observar la mayoría de mis objetivos. Al día siguiente visité la zona de San Diego, concretamente los alrededores de Mission Bay (no hubo tiempo para más, aunque la zona de San Diego tiene otras visitas ornitológicas interesantes). Para elegir los lugares a visitar, me basé en el libro "A birder's guide to Southern California" de Brad Schram, publicado por la American Birding Association.
On November 15, after renting a car, I moved from Anaheim to San Diego. My intention was to stop at different locations within the coast to observe birds. I was mainly interested in species associated with the rocky coast. An earthquake fault close to Corona del Mar, divides the Orange County coast in two well differentiated areas. The north is composed of sandy beaches, whereas rocky coast begins south of this city. Therefore, I drove below Corona del Mar, visiting first, Crescent Bay Point Park, and then the Treasure Island Park (indispensable!!) and La Jolla. During the afternoon I visited the Torrey Pines State Reserve. Here, I visited the interior chaparral area, as I had already achieved most of my objectives in the two previous stops. The next day I visited the San Diego area, specifically around Mission Bay (I had no time to visit more locations, although the San Diego area has other interesting birding spots). To choose the places to visit, I relied on the book "A birder's guide to Southern California" by Brad Schram, published by the American Birding Association.

1. Crescent Bay Point Park (Laguna Beach).
Se trata de un pequeño parque situado sobre un acantilado no muy alto desde donde se pueden observar algunas limicolas, como vuelvepiedras oscuro, y gaviotas, como la mexicana y la occidental. Enfrente queda el mar abierto y unas rocas con cormoranes sargento y pelícanos alcatraz. En el parque sorprendía la cantidad de colibrís de Allen. It is an small park located over a rocky cliff, where it is possible to see black turnstones or gulls, like western and heermann's. 2. Treasure Island Park (Wesley Dr., Laguna Beach).
Es una de las mejores localizaciones en el condado de Orange para estudiar las aves asociadas a la costa con rocas, y además desde muy cerquita (incluyendo vuelvepiedras negro, chorlito gris o correlimos de rompientes). En la zona superior, además, los jardines atraen a un buen número de paseriformes (sisonte norteño, reinita coroninaranja, o mosquero negro). This is the easiest location in the whole Orange County to study rock shorebirds at close range (including black turnstone, grey plover, or surfbird). In the upper park, gardens attract a number of passerines (northern mockingbird, orange-crowned warbler, black phoebe). 3. Torrey Pines State Reserve--Extension (San Diego County).
Ya después de comer me acerqué a la Torrey Pines State Reserve. Esta reserva estatal fue creada para proteger un raro pino nativo de esta zona y de la isla de Santa Rosa. Cuenta con dos partes, una zona litoral, de marisma, que no tuve tiempo de visitar, y una extensión compuesta por chaparral y pinar disperso, donde pude disfrutar de varias especies, como colibrí de Allen, pico pubescente, mito sastrecillo, toquí californiano o chingolo coronidorado. After lunch, I visited the Torrey Pines State Reserve. This state reserve was set aside to protect a rare endemic pine, native of this area and the Santa Rosa Island. It has a coastal area, consisting of marshes, that I did not have time to visit, and an extension of chapparal and pines. In this last portion I managed to see Allen's hummingbird, downy woodpecker, american bushtit, california towhee, and golden-crowned sparrow. 4. La Jolla (San Diego County).
Se trata de un popular punto turístico, pero que bien merece una rápida visita. En los acantilados es posible ver una buena variedad de gaviotas y pelícanos. This is a popular tourist spot, but it is interesting to do a rapid visit. In the cliffs it is possible to see several gull species and brown pelicans. 5. South Shores Parkway (San Diego).
Supuestamente se trata de una buena zona para el pajareo, especialmente con marea alta, yo no tuve mucha suerte en cuanto a aves acuáticas. Sin embargo, si había una buena población de paseriformes, como alondras cornudas, chingolos cantor, sabanero, coronidorado y coroniblanco, y jilgueros menores. This area was expected to be a good birding spot, at least during the high tide. However, I was not lucky with water birds. Despite this, I managed to see a good number of passerines, including horned lark, song, savannah, white-crowned and golden-crowned sparrows, and lesser goldfinch. 6. Salida en barco desde Mission Bay / Boat trip from Mission Bay (San Diego).
Aproveché la mañada del día 16, después de visitar el South Shores Park, para hacer una pequeña salida en barco desde Mission Bay para avistar mamíferos marinos. Vimos muchísimos delfines de hocico corto, aunque no ballenas. Respecto a las aves, pude hacer observaciones lejanas de pardela culinegra, y varias gaviotas, incluyendo la de Bonaparte que no había visto hasta ahora. During the morning, on November 16th, and after my visit to the South Shores Park, I did a whale wathching boat trip departing from Mission Bay. We saw lots of short-beaked common dolphins, but not whales. Regarding birds, I saw black-vented shearwater, and several gulls, including Bonaparte's, that I did not have the opportunity to see before. 7. San Diego River Tidal Mudflats (San Diego).
Se trata de un lugar muy interesante, con multitud de limícolas, entre las que cabe mencionar los zarapitos trinador y americano, los correlimos de Alaska, menudillo, común y tridáctilo, el playero aliblanco o la agujeta gris. En sus aguas un buen número de barnaclas carinegras. Se puede observar desde ambas orillas, lo cual te permite acercarte a las distintas especies de interés. This is a very interesting place, where you can see a multitude of shorebirds and other marsh birds, including whimbrel and long-billed curlew, dunlin, sanderling and western and least sandpipers, willet, and short-billed dowitcher. In the water a good number of brent geese. The visit can be done from both sides of the river, increasing the chances to be near of the different species.
